Commentary
And when they were saying out of stubbornness: 'Indeed, the Qur'an, with what it contains of warning, is magic,' this warning caused his saying to be a reproachful, scolding, mocking one: 'Is this magic?' That is, what you are in of punishment along with this burning that you are being scorched by. 'Or are you' in a dream or something similar 'not seeing' with your hearts as you used to say in the world 'Our hearts are in coverings' [Fussilat: 5] nor with your eyes as you used to say to the warners 'And between us and you is a barrier, so work, indeed, we are working' [Fussilat: 5]. That is, you are blind to the news about it along with its burning for them, just as you were blind to the news. That is, can you say that you do not see the news about it as you used to say in the news falsely and wickedly? Then it will be said to them after this reproach that cuts off that their response will be to say: 'No, by the might of our Lord, it is neither magic nor illusion, but it is the truth.' And we are in the utmost vision in a manner of disgrace, humiliation, and degradation.
