Commentary

(p-1) Surah Al-Tur

Its purpose is to establish the occurrence of the punishment, which is the content of the sworn warning regarding its occurrence in Al-Dhariyat, which is the content of the warning indicating its truth in Qaf. For its occurrence is more certain and more possible than the mountains, which the truthful one informed about their movement, and made the crushing of some of them a sign of that. And from the Book regarding the most certain of its conditions for the possibility of washing it and burning it, and from the house that its inhabitant and others can demolish, and the roof that its raiser can place, and the sea that whoever has contained it can release. It has become clear that its name is the most indicative of that by considering the oath and its response, even with the individual words in His address (In the name of Allah) the Greatest King, the Owner of the Kingdom and Sovereignty (the Most Gracious) who encompasses with mercy whoever realizes it (the Most Merciful) who has specifically granted His mercy and success to the people of devotion.

* * When Al-Dhariyat concluded with the establishment of the warning, this was opened with the affirmation of the punishment, which is the essence of the warning. So He, the Exalted, said: ﴿By the Mount﴾. This is because when they said about what the Messenger brought to them, blessings and peace be upon him, that it was magic of imagination with no reality to it, He swore by the mountain - which is the most established and solid of the earth, and the hardest of it - and expressed it with Al-Tur, which is common between the absolute mountain and that which is attributed to Sinai, where the Prophethood of Musa, peace be upon him, was, and where much of his Book was revealed, and other than that - signs that the Children of Israel know, who seek advice from them and ask them about the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, and are satisfied with their words about him. Among its signs is that there was mercy in it with the supplication of Musa, peace be upon him, and what was written for him on the tablets of jewels, and what was revealed to him from the Torah, which He made a guidance, mercy, admonition, reminder, and detailed explanation for everything. And in it, along with mercy, was punishment for what came to them from the thunderbolt that killed them, then Allah brought them back to life, and for what they witnessed from the cloud that was interspersed, so it would be like the smoke of the furnace, and in it were lightning bolts like the greatest that is seen from the fire, and trumpets that blared with a tremendous sound. And for what was witnessed from the cracking of the mountain at the manifestation and the fainting of Musa, peace be upon him, and other than that from the signs that reveal the darkness. Also, Al-Tur is every mountain that grows, and the growth of the mountain is astonishing, for its vegetation does not occur except for a reason, and the reason for vegetation is water, and water is spread in the earth for its composition, and it is parallel to what has been revealed from the water of the seas. And whenever the land rises, it distances itself from the water, and the mountains are the farthest from it. So the reason for its growth is very hidden, known only to Allah and to whoever He has made to understand it.
