Commentary
Indeed, you, O assembly of Quraysh, are certainly in a saying that surrounds you regarding the matter of the Qur'an and the one who brings it, and all matters of your religion and other things by which you seek to nullify the true religion. It is different, like the difference of the paths of the heavens which hardly align, and whose beginning is not known from its end. And the difference of these things by which the oath is taken from the beginning of the Surah and the difference of its purposes, yet it is, with that, conflicting. And if you strive to adorn it and bring it closer to understanding and improve it, it hardly aligns with a standard when presented by the critic to the penetrating thought. It does not conform to a rule nor does it connect to a bond. Rather, at times you say: This is poetry, so you must describe it with what you describe poetry in terms of coherence with the pure meter and the unified rhyme, and the sweetness and elegance. And at times you say: This is magic, so you must, along with the acknowledgment of your inability regarding it, assert that it has no realities. The reality is that no one with understanding contemplates it except that he sees its realities established like mountains. And at times you say: These are confused dreams, so you must assert that it does not conform to a standard, nor does it have a concept that can be grasped, and no one is unable to fabricate something like it. Thus, you have invalidated your saying: It is poetry, and it is magic.
And at times you say: Indeed, it is divination, so you must believe in it what you believe regarding the sayings of the diviners about informing of the unseen and revealing secrets and making judgments. Thus, you have invalidated what you previously said: Confused dreams, magic, and poetry. And at times you say: Indeed, it is madness, so you have refuted all your previous sayings and proclaimed to yourselves in boastfulness, saying regarding the one who brings it: He is a poet, a magician, mad, a diviner, and a liar. Each of these sayings contradicts the other, while you claim that you are the most truthful of people and the farthest from the disgrace of lying, and that you are the most rational of people and the most just. So, there has been a distance first between your sayings, then between them and your actions. The difference in the paths of the stars indicates a chosen one, complete in knowledge and perfect in ability. Likewise, the difference in your saying regarding this matter, along with what you possess of intellects, indicates a conqueror over you regarding that. These are two signs in the horizons and in yourselves.
