Commentary
And when glorified is He confined His creation to the will of worship, He made this concept clear by His saying: ﴿I do not want from them﴾ meaning: at any time, and He included in the negation by His saying: ﴿of provision﴾ meaning: something from the things in a way that benefits Me, whether by bringing or repelling, because I am exalted above needing any benefit or harm, as others do with their slaves by accumulating their crops and relying on their forces, for I am the Absolute Rich, and everything is in need of Me. ﴿And I do not want﴾ in essence ﴿that they feed Me﴾ meaning: [that] they provide Me with a specific provision which is feeding. And therein is an allusion to their idols; for they used to do what benefits them and bring food for them, and perhaps the dogs would eat it and then urinate on the idols. Then that does not deter them. And this verse is evidence that provision is broader than just food, and the expression of will indicates what I have said, that it is intended by worship. It is the conduct under the will, sometimes in agreement with the law and sometimes in opposition to it.
