And when everything other than Him must have an opposite that opposes it or a companion that suffices for it, as for Him, glorified and exalted is He, there is nothing like Him. For if there were something like Him, it would contend with Him, and He would not be able to do all that He wills. "If there were in them gods other than Allah, they would both have been ruined" [Al-Anbiya: 22]. It has been established that He destroyed the earlier generations for opposing the messengers, blessings and peace be upon them. Thus, it has been established that there is punishment for those who are accountable, from which they deserve to flee. And it has been established that everything other than Him is in need of its counterpart, which proves the need of all to Him. And there is no sufficiency in anything for all that is sought from it. It is necessary that one should not flee except to the One who is Self-Sufficient. Hence, He caused this to be the reason for His saying: "So flee"; meaning: come and go towards Him. And when He trained His servants in this surah with the attribute of Lordship extensively, they became qualified to penetrate the unseen. And worship cannot be pure unless it is connected to the Essence, not for anything else. He mentioned the name of the Essence and said: "to Allah"; meaning: to the One who has no equivalent, and to whom belongs all perfection. He is in the utmost exaltation, so no one settles or finds peace with one who is in need like himself. For the one in need has no self-sufficiency with him, nor does He settle, glorified is He. Except for one who has detached himself from the lowly obstacles of his physicality to the heights of his spiritual attributes. And this is from His warning to His promise, which He indicated with the two pairs. The context moved between warning, appealing, and calling. It is from the saying: "There is no refuge from You except to You; I seek refuge with You from You." And it continued to the end of the surah, mentioning it as a reference to the greatness of His matter. Then He justified with His saying, confirming what they have of denial: "Indeed, I am to you from Him"; meaning: not from anyone else, "a warner"; meaning: so that no one flees to anyone other than Him, for he will not achieve his aim. When He established the evident rational proof very clearly, which anyone knows within himself regarding what He said in this unique statement, He said: "clear". Thus, the flight of the general public from ignorance to knowledge is through commitment and striving, and from laziness to diligence with caution and resolution, and from constriction to ease with trust and hope. And the flight of the elite is from good to witnessing, and from forms to fundamentals, and from fortunes to purity. And the flight of the elite of the elite is from what is less than the truth to the truth, witnessing the majesty of Him and immersing in His oneness. Al-Qushayri said: And whoever's flight to Allah is sound, his flight with Allah is sound. It has ended. And it is with complete following, and there is none other than it. And whoever understands from it a unity in attribute or essence has lost what defines the path of the people, and upon him is the curse of Allah.
