Commentary
So we found that he entrusted the matter to him as an honor for His messengers, informing that their action is His action. "In it, there was not a single house," which is the house of Lut, the son of the brother of Ibrahim, blessings and peace be upon him. It was said that the number of those who were saved from them was thirteen. Since Islam can be applied to the apparent only, although what is meant here is the more specific, he said: "from the Muslims," meaning those who are deeply rooted in Islam, both outwardly and inwardly, for Allah, without any objection at all. They are Ibrahim and his family, blessings and peace be upon them, for they were the first to have the complete Islam found in them. They were called by it, as was mentioned in Al-Baqarah, and they named their followers by it. Thus, this one house was truly representative of the faith, which is the affirmation, and the Islam, which is the submission. Al-Baghawi said: Allah, glorified and exalted is He, described them with both faith and Islam because no believer believes except that he is a Muslim. This means due to the necessary connection between them, even if the concepts differ. Al-Asbahani said: It was said that Lut and the members of his household who were saved were thirteen.
