Commentary

And when they were far from accepting the child, this was caused by his saying, indicating that the child is Isaac, along with the indication that the concealment of the causes does not affect the existence of the effects: ﴿So she came﴾ meaning: from hearing this speech ﴿his wife﴾. And when she was filled with amazement, he expressed it with the adverbial phrase and said: ﴿in a cry﴾ meaning: a shout and distress from the shrieking that surrounded her. Their thoughts went in every direction regarding this. ﴿So she struck﴾ meaning: she struck due to her astonishment with the tips of her fingers, the action of one who is astonished ﴿her face﴾ to eliminate the causes of the child in her knowledge due to the custom, while knowing that the lesson is in the causes, even if they are sound with the cause, not with it. Al-Baghawi said: The origin of striking is hitting something with something broad. ﴿And she said﴾ wanting to clarify the matter: Is the child from her or from another? ﴿An old woman﴾ and with old age ﴿barren﴾, for in her youth she was not able to conceive. Al-Qushayri, may Allah have mercy on him, said: It was said that she was at that time ninety-eight years old.
