And when it became clear from what I have presented in "And those who divide [the matter]" [Adh-Dhariyat: 4] what is in the direction of the high from the causes that necessitate blessings and punishment, he said: "And in the heaven" meaning: the direction of the high "is your provision" by what comes from the rain, winds, heat, cold, and other things that He, glorified and exalted is He, has arranged for the benefits of the servants. "And what you are promised" and all that the messengers have brought you of the promise and warning, the great shock, the earthquake, and other terrifying events and causes of punishment, as well as mercy, goodness, blessings, and everything that hopes are related to. Just as you believe in that while you do not see it, so believe in Paradise and Hell even if you do not see them; for there is no difference between water that Allah sends down, from which there are gardens and orchards, and thorns, and diseases, and bitterness, and poisons, and scorpions, and snakes, and creeping things, and wild beasts, and insects, and between water by which He brings the dead back to life, then gathers them to gardens and fires. Just as there is no doubt in the manifestation of this unseen, so there is no confusion in the manifestation of that unseen. And from the meaning also is that you should not be preoccupied with provision; for it is in the heaven, and there is no way for you to ascend to it. Rather, be occupied with what you have been commanded of service to the One who has the provision; for in the heaven is the provision and to it the deeds are raised. If you want your provision to descend to you, then elevate the righteous of your deeds to it. For this reason, they said: prayer is a branch of the door of provision. "And be patient upon it; We do not ask you for provision; We provide for you" [Ta-Ha: 132].
