Commentary
And when He, glorified and exalted is He, indicated the completeness of His power and the perfection of His knowledge, and other attributes of perfection, by the sign of the heavens, He followed that with a demonstration that it cannot be said of Him: 'inside the world' or 'outside it'; because He is connected to it and not separated from it. He emphasized this by the indication of the sign of the earth, and He delayed it; because the heavens are more indicative of the glory that this context is about, as they are the most astonishing creation, the highest in elevation, the greatest in magnitude, and the most significant in effect. The earth, due to its close association with it and the gathering of its fruits, causes man to be heedless of its indication, because of what he has in that from benefits and advantages. So He said: 'And the earth' meaning: the one surrounding them, 'We have spread it' meaning: We have made it expansive for what We have of greatness, not elevated. And when the extended one sways, He said: 'And We placed' by Our greatness 'in it firm mountains' meaning: steadfast mountains that are a cause for its stability, and it contradicted the custom of anchors in that they are above, while anchors you deal with from below.
And when its inhabitants cannot do without sustenance, He said, expressing gratitude towards them: 'And We caused to grow' by what We have of greatness 'in it' and He magnified its power by mentioning part of it, so He said: 'of every kind' meaning: a type of plant that pairs with all your provisions, 'beautiful' meaning: it is in the utmost splendor and admiration, so it was - while being sustenance - also exalted.
