Commentary
And when the estimation was: and they do not deny that from our greatness because they acknowledge that We created the heavens and the earth and We created them from dust, and We are the ones who send down the water, and the plants grow. He turned away from it with His saying: ﴿Rather, they have denied the truth﴾, meaning: the established matter from which there is no denial. ﴿When﴾, meaning: at the time of ﴿it came to them﴾ due to the astonishment they had regarding the sending of their messenger, from the inclinations of their souls and their overpowering desires, out of envy from them without reflection on what they said, nor contemplation, nor consideration in it, nor thought. Therefore, they said what is unreasonable, that the One who is capable of bringing something into existence from non-existence and initiating it is not capable of returning it after its annihilation and destruction.
And when it resulted from their affiliation with this weak saying and their being bound in its obligation, their confusion in opinion arose: will they return and attribute it to ignorance, recklessness, folly, and foolishness, or will they persist in it, which would lead, along with their disbelief in the One who created them, to something greater than that, such as fighting and killing, and attributing to recklessness and ignorance? He expressed this meaning by saying: ﴿So they﴾, meaning: because of their hastening to this worthless saying, ﴿are in a confused matter﴾, meaning: very confused and mixed up, from the mixing of plants with different types. They [at times] say: magic, and at times divination, and at times poetry, and at times lies, and at times other than that. And confusion necessitates disagreement, and that is the clearest evidence for falsification, just as stability and clarity necessitate agreement, and that is the clearest evidence for truth. Al-Hasan said: A people have not abandoned the truth except that their matter became confused - and so said Qatadah, and he added: and their religion became mixed up for them.
