Commentary

And when we mentioned here of the admonitions that have made the inanimate tremble, how about one who claims to be among the heads of critics? He produced his saying confirmed for the sake of denying the denier and the obstinacy of the obstinate: (p-436) ﴿Indeed, in that﴾ meaning [the matter] wondrous of the admonitions which we have arranged here according to what you see of the strange styles and peculiar ways in destruction and others ﴿is a reminder﴾ meaning: a very great reminder. And when the one who remembers is by the deaths of the doomed [sometimes] by being present so that he sees their deaths at the time of their being struck or he sees their traces after that, and sometimes he is informed about it, he said beginning with the one who sees because he is more deserving of remembrance: ﴿For whoever has﴾ meaning: a great existence ﴿a heart﴾ which is in the utmost greatness and luminosity, if he sees something of that, he is in a position to understand what he sees and to take pride in it. And whoever is not like that, then he has no heart; because when his heart is not beneficial, it is as if it does not exist.

And when he had begun with the observer because he is more worthy of consideration and closer to remembrance, he then turned to the one to whom the news has been conveyed, and he said: ﴿Or has he thrown﴾ meaning: a great throwing to the utmost of his listening until he seems to throw something heavy from high to low ﴿the hearing﴾ meaning: the complete hearing which he has stripped of distractions from desires and others when he hears what is absent from him ﴿and he is﴾ meaning: [and] the state is that he is in the state of his throwing ﴿a witness﴾ meaning: fully present, so he is in the utmost of what can be from the correctness of thought and the gathering of the mind, so nothing escapes him of what has been recited to him and thrown to him, so he remembers by what we reminded him of our power from the particulars what it has produced of the power over everything, and he saw the glory of the Qur'an, so he knew that it is the speech of Allah, so he heard it from Him and believed the Messenger, and accepted all that he informs him of. And whoever hears something and does not have his mind present for it, then he is absent. So the first is the one who knows the power and he is the one who is naturally inclined (p-437) to complete readiness, so he is in a position where he does not need anything other than contemplation for what he has of the prepared perfection by understanding what the Qur'an reminds him of. And the second is the one who is deficient by what he has of the density of nature, so he is in a position where he needs teaching, so he remembers on the condition that he accepts it completely and removes all obstacles. Therefore, the position of 'or' which divides is very good, and from it is known the great honor of the Qur'an in that it is a bearer of good tidings for both the complete and the deficient; there is nothing from it that prevents except for turning away.
