And when the companion had said what preceded, intending by it - out of ignorance - to escape from the punishment by showing that he is not of the attributes of this soul, but rather one of the great believers, his words were responded to by casting that soul, justifying the matter by casting it with what included this companion. The listener became eager for what would be of his condition. It was customary that whoever spoke about a person with something similar to him, especially if he was the cause of it or if that person had spoken about him, then that analogy would necessitate, and it is inevitable that that soul would say the words about it. And this is when it comes to casting it: 'Our Lord, he has caused me to be arrogant.' The Most High responded to this eagerness by His saying: 'His companion said,' calling out by dropping the tool, as is the habit of the people of closeness, implying that he is one of them: 'Our Lord,' O Benefactor [to us], O all creatures, 'I did not cause him to be arrogant,' meaning: I did not cause him to fall into what he was in of arrogance; for indeed, I have no authority over him, and You know that. 'But he was,' by his nature and disposition, 'in far astray,' surrounding him from all sides, making it impossible for him to return with it. Therefore, he would hasten to all that angers Allah, and indeed, his movement towards it, if he missed it, does not require the slightest stirring, and he would erupt like one who is naturally inclined and ingrained in his disposition.
