Commentary
And when the Most High informed about what the angels say to Him or those among His soldiers whom He wanted, and He had informed that their objects of worship from the idols and the devils and others would be against them on the Day of Resurrection, He informed about what the companion says from the driver and the witness and the devil whose talk was previously mentioned in Az-Zukhruf. So He said [adding] to the intended saying before "Indeed" expressing with the past tense to emphasize its content and to affirm it: ﴿And his companion said﴾ meaning: the devil who was assigned to mislead him and lead him to what he desires; this was narrated by Al-Kirmani from Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both.
﴿This﴾ meaning: the human whom You have associated me with. And when the matter is astonishing in both the obedient and the disobedient; because the obedient renounces his desires so he becomes angelic, free from his own whims and the inclinations of his soul and the deficiencies and desires built upon it, [while the disobedient] is under the control of the devil, who directs him in his aims as he wishes, so he obeys him with utmost desire while knowing of his enmity, and that his obedience can only be by opposing the command of Allah, the Protecting, Loving One. And the disobedient is more numerous; the obedient in comparison to him is like a white hair in the skin of a black bull, and this is contrary to reason. He indicated this contradiction with the tool of one who does not understand and to all that is in his matter of astonishment, saying: ﴿What is with me﴾ meaning: [the matter] that is with me of the truly astonishing matter due to the fact that the obedient disobeyed me, while he is naturally inclined to the deficiencies and desires which he sees [as] his life and pleasure and comfort, and the disobedient obeyed me while he knows with his intellect that I am pure evil, and he left the pure good while knowing that in that is his destruction. ﴿Ready﴾ meaning: present and prepared for what is intended from him.
