Commentary
And when this was evident from what the context guided to, he built upon it another indication of the comprehensiveness of His knowledge: ﴿But﴾ [that is] their denial is not for the sake of denying anything of His glory nor for denying your truthfulness, which is from His glory, but because they ﴿were astonished﴾ that is: the disbelievers, and they implied before the mention an indication that if he mentioned something outside the norms of uprightness, it would turn to them. Astonishment is from the change of the soul due to a matter outside [of the norm].
And when the situation was for frightening those who had come before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ or who had been favored with Islam or others, or for frightening those who denied resurrection, he limited himself to warning and said: ﴿That a warner has come to them﴾ he warned them truly of the punishment of Allah at the resurrection, which is the center of wisdom. And he was astonished by their astonishment with his saying: ﴿from them﴾ because the norm among them and among all people [is that] if the warner is from them, there is no doubt in his warning in any way. And these contradicted the norm of people in their astonishment at the fact that the warner - who is one of them - was specifically chosen for the message over them, and they did not perceive the reason for the specificity because he is like them. Thus, they denied his message and the virtue of his book with their tongues out of envy and jealousy; because they were acknowledging the characteristics that Allah, glorified and exalted is He, had raised him with before the message, so their astonishment brought them down to the lowest depths of foolishness and light-mindedness; because they were astonished that the Messenger was a human and they insisted [that] the deity must be a stone, and they were astonished that he could be revived from dust, and that life could be established for him, while they were not astonished that they began from dust and had no origin in life. And for this reason, he caused his saying: ﴿So they said﴾ that is: because of his warning of resurrection and after it ﴿the disbelievers﴾ he made evident in the place of warning an indication that nothing of his affair was hidden from them, but they concealed transgression in the view of their minds, which indicate all of his affair with a clear indication. And he expressed with what indicated warning because it is the greatest intended purpose of this surah, and all of the context of the private chambers is evident in it: ﴿This﴾ that the warner from us was specifically chosen for the message over us, and that what he warned of is resurrection after death ﴿is something astonishing﴾ that is: profound in deviating from the norm of its forms. And they certainly denied that. As for the warner, most of the messengers were from the groups that were sent to them, and few among them were strangers from those who were sent to them. And as for resurrection, most of what exists in the universe is like that of the revival of each of the two colors after its departure and the revival of the earth [from] after its death and the beginning of revival for all dead animals and the emergence of plants, trees, and fruits, and other things that are [very] evident.
