Commentary

And when the date palm is one of the most amazing things that is formed from it, along with its benefits that no tree can equal in them, and the contrast for cultivation by height and shortness and the consistency for the sustenance of humans and animals, He said: ﴿And the date palms, tall﴾ meaning: high and tall above all the fruitful trees that have good fruits. ﴿For it﴾ along with the dryness of its trunk, ﴿is a cluster of dates﴾ meaning: arranged and stacked, some above others, and it is the filling of its fruit. The fruit is that which comes out from the top of the date palm as if it were two folded actions, and the clustered fruit is between them, and the end is defined. Or the fruit is what appears from the date palm's fruit at the first appearance of it, and that covering is called the kuffarī for its covering of it in a more perfect and secure manner. The fruit resembles what is in the she-camel's udder that is formed in its breast before giving birth. Then it becomes after its unification in whiteness, which is a cluster, to the separation at the time of ripening into red, yellow, green, and other strange colors, and amazing qualities. It encompasses benefits by indulging in several types and sustenance and other than that. And its fruit is different from the habit of most trees; for its fruits are individual, each seed is separate from its sister.
