Commentary
And when it became clear that He is capable of all things; because He is knowledgeable of all things; and this verse - as has been mentioned - refers to the beginning of the surah from the verse: ﴿Do not make lawful the symbols of Allah﴾ [Al-Ma'idah: 2]; and what follows it; it completed the consideration; He mentioned - glorified and exalted is He - what surrounded the verse: ﴿Prohibited to you is dead meat﴾ [Al-Ma'idah: 3]; of the warning with which He concluded what came before it; and the promise with which it was concluded; in this verse in its arrangement; leading it to the result; and the fruit of what preceded it; clarifying that whoever commits something from these prohibitions, his share is; so He said - warning and giving glad tidings; because faith is not complete except with both of them -: ﴿Know that Allah﴾; meaning: the One who has all greatness; the One who forbade him from it; ﴿is Severe in punishment﴾; so let His servants be cautious of Him; and that whoever is caused to fall into something of it by destiny; then if he opens for him the success the door of caution; and he atoned for what he has atonement for; and repented; he is addressed by His saying: ﴿And know that﴾; meaning: and know that ﴿Allah﴾; meaning: the One who has majesty and honor; while He is Severe in punishment; ﴿is Forgiving and Merciful﴾; He turns to him; and erases his slips; and honors him; so the gathering of the causes of hope preceded the warning; and followed it; informing that His mercy preceded His anger; and that punishment is only for the completion of His mercy; Ibn Al-Zubair said: Then He said: ﴿Allah has made the Ka'bah﴾ [Al-Ma'idah: 97]; the verse; so He alerted to the bad outcome in preventing the inquiry into the reasoning; and seeking to stand upon what perhaps Allah has exclusively kept with His knowledge; and from this aspect, He addressed the Children of Israel in the matter of the cow; and other than that; and He made this alert a hint; then followed it with what explains it; ﴿O you who have believed, do not ask about things﴾ [Al-Ma'idah: 101]; and He admonished them regarding the state of others in this; and that they asked and were given; then they were tested; and that submission was more appropriate for them; so He said (the Exalted): ﴿A people before you asked for it, then they became disbelievers by it﴾ [Al-Ma'idah: 102]; then He informed His servants that if they are upright, then the failure of others will not harm them; ﴿O you who have believed, upon you are yourselves﴾ [Al-Ma'idah: 105]; it has ended.
