Commentary
And when that was familiar to them; beloved to them; and leaving the familiar was more bitter than striking with swords; he emphasized their call to avoid it; warning against disobedience; by saying - adding to what you estimate: "So avoid it" -: ﴿And obey Allah﴾; meaning: the Most High King; who has no partner; and there is no command for anyone besides Him; meaning: in what He has commanded you to avoid that; and he confirmed the command by repeating the action; saying: ﴿And obey the Messenger﴾; meaning: the one who is complete in messengership; in that; and he increased in the warning by saying: ﴿And beware﴾; meaning: of disobedience; then he reached the utmost limit in that by saying: ﴿So if you turn away﴾; meaning: by turning towards something of that; and he indicated by the form of "tafa'ul" that this only occurs through a treatment from the self for the original nature; and he magnified the matter at the beginning of the reward by the warning (p-295) with the command of knowledge; saying: ﴿So know﴾; that you have not harmed except yourselves; because the proof has been established against you; and there remains nothing upon the Messenger; because you have known ﴿That upon our Messenger﴾; meaning: the one who is great in magnitude that is beyond description; by his addition to us; ﴿The clear message﴾; meaning: clear in itself; clarifying for everyone who hears it what is intended from it; no one else; so whoever disobeys, let him look at what calamity will come to him from us; and this refers to his saying: ﴿Deliver what has been revealed to you from your Lord﴾ [Al-Ma'idah: 67]; as if it were said: there is nothing upon him except what has preceded of our obligation to him regarding the message; so whoever chooses for himself disobedience has disbelieved; and Allah does not guide the one who has chosen disbelief for himself.
