Commentary
And when the wisdom of the prohibition of idols and arrows had been mentioned at the beginning of the surah; which is that they are a sin; he limited himself to explaining the reason for the prohibition of wine and gambling; informing that they are the specific targets; even though the others were included only to emphasize the prohibition of these two - as has been mentioned -; because the addressees are the people of faith; and they had been avoiding those two; so he said - confirming that refraining from what had been indulged in requires something like that -: "Indeed, Satan only intends by enticing you to drink and gamble; to cause enmity among you."
And when enmity can have its causes removed; he mentioned what arises from it; which, if it becomes established, becomes difficult to remove; so he said: "And hatred in wine and gambling;" meaning: in consuming them; because wine removes the intellect; thus the barrier to revealing the hidden grudges; and discussions; and jealousy is removed; perhaps this leads to long wars; and terrible matters; and gambling takes away wealth; which necessitates enmity for the one who has had his wealth taken from him; and it disturbs his conditions.
And when he mentioned their harm in this world; he mentioned their harm in religion; so he said: "And it prevents you from the remembrance of Allah;" meaning: the Greatest King; for whom there is no deity besides Him; nor equal to Him; and he repeated the warning; emphasizing the matter; and intensifying the warning; so he said: "And from prayer;" as for wine, it is clear; and as for gambling, it is because the winner forgets due to the intoxication of victory; and the loser is overwhelmed by his worry; and he threatened them greatly with the question; and the nominal sentence indicating stability after the emphasis with restriction; and the addition to the actions of ignorance; and the explanation of the wisdoms that call for abandonment; and the evils that repel from the action; so he said: "So will you not desist?" meaning: before that which you cannot bear befall you.
