And when the state of food was made clear; and it was a call to drink; there was a need to clarify it; so He (the Most High) clarified what is forbidden from it; and it was known that what is besides it is permitted for enjoyment; and this is parallel in the prohibition of something associated with the necessary; after the permissibility of another; due to what is in the beginning of the Surah regarding the prohibition of carrion; and what was mentioned with it after the permissibility of the livestock; and what is with it; so He (the Most High) said - reminding them of what they acknowledged of faith; which means submission -: "O you who have believed"; meaning: acknowledge it; and He alerted them to what the enemy intends for them of evil; by His saying (the Most High): "Indeed, intoxicants"; and it is everything that intoxicates; whether little or much; and He added to it what is similar to it in harm; in religion; and in the world; and in being a cause for disputes; and the abundance of noise that necessitates swearing and oaths; emphasizing the prohibition of intoxicants; by indicating that all of it is from the actions of ignorance; so there is no difference between its drinker; and the one who slaughters at the altars; and the one who relies on the arrows; so He said: "And gambling"; meaning: that which was previously mentioned in "Al-Baqarah"; "and the stones and the arrows"; their mention also came at the beginning of the Surah; and the arrow: the lot that has no feather; as stated by Al-Bukhari; and the wisdom of their arrangement is that when intoxicants are the ultimate in leading to the destruction of wealth; He coupled with it what follows it in that; which is gambling; and when gambling is a corruption of wealth; He coupled with it the corruption of religion; which is the stones; and when the glorification of the stones is clear polytheism if they are worshipped; and hidden polytheism if slaughtered upon without worship; He coupled with it a type of hidden polytheism; which is seeking divination with the arrows; then He commanded to avoid all of it; in indication and expression; in the most complete manner; so He said: "An abomination"; meaning: filth; deserving to be distanced from it in every regard; even from mentioning it; whether it is an essence; or a meaning; and whether the abomination is in the sensory; or the meaning; and He unified the report for the text on intoxicants; and the indication that the reports of the three were omitted; and estimated; because they are deserving to be said for each one of them individually likewise; and one report is not enough for it in the manner of gathering; then He increased in repelling from it; emphasizing its filthiness; by His saying: "From the work of Satan"; meaning: the burning; the distant; then He stated what the context necessitated from avoidance; so He said: "So avoid it"; meaning: intend to be on another side; other than its side; and He singled out what has preceded from the wisdoms; then He justified with what is understood that there is no success in anything of the demands with its directness; so He said: "So that you may succeed"; meaning: you may attain all of your demands; Al-Bukhari narrated in the Tafsir; from Ibn Umar - may Allah be pleased with them - who said: Indeed, intoxicants were prohibited and there was nothing of it in Medina; and in a narration: The prohibition of intoxicants was revealed while there were five drinks in Medina; none of which was grape drink; and in a narration from him: I heard Umar; on the pulpit of the Prophet - blessings and peace be upon him - saying: "As for what follows; O people; indeed, the prohibition of intoxicants was revealed; and it is from five: from grapes - and in a narration: from raisins -; and dates; and honey; and wheat; and barley; and intoxicants are that which clouds the mind"; and from Anas ibn Malik - may Allah be pleased with him - who said: We had no intoxicants except for this spoiled one; and I was standing serving Abu Talhah; and so-and-so and so-and-so; when a man came and said: "Intoxicants have been prohibited"; they said: Pour out these jars, O Anas; so they did not ask about it; nor did they return to it after the news of the man; and in a narration from him: Intoxicants were prohibited upon us when they were prohibited and we do not find grape intoxicants except a little; and most of our intoxicants are from unripe dates and dates; Al-Asbahani said: And that was after the Battle of the Confederates; by days.
