Commentary
And when He commanded - glorified and exalted is He - and forbade, He gave glad tidings and warned. He said: ﴿Allah has promised﴾; meaning: the King who has absolute perfection; for Him is everything. ﴿Those who have believed﴾; meaning: they affirmed belief with their tongues. ﴿And did righteous deeds﴾; as a confirmation of this affirmation. ﴿The righteous﴾; and leaving out the second object is more appropriate in the context of glad tidings; for it encompasses all good. The soul inclines to interpret it in every way.
And when the promise consists of two things; favor and the removal of a right, He prioritized the removal of the right; to ensure safety from fear. He said - placing the promised in a form indicative of stability and specificity: ﴿For them is forgiveness﴾; meaning: for what they have committed; for what human beings are naturally inclined to, which is deficiency; whether by forgetfulness or intentionally; by performing the obligatory acts, if they are minor, and by repentance if they are major. And therein is an indication that no one can truly measure Allah as He deserves. And when He assured them of forgiveness, He followed it with generosity in giving; He said: ﴿And a great reward﴾; meaning: according to the degree of their good deeds; ﴿Great﴾; meaning: the difference in their degrees does not fall under limitation.
