And they say: 'What'; meaning: what has happened; or what will happen to us; while we are in a state of not believing in Allah; meaning: the One who has no equal; and no good except from Him; and what; meaning: and by what; has come to us of the truth; meaning: the established matter; which whatever is presented to reality, it matches reality; whether it is present; or past; or coming?

And when they were wronging themselves; they expressed it with greed; which has no consideration for any action; so they said: 'And we hope that our Lord will admit us'; meaning: merely by His grace; not by any action from us; and due to their running in this field; they expressed it with 'with'; without 'in'; in their saying: 'with the righteous people'; as a way of belittling themselves; and magnifying the rank of righteousness.
