Commentary
And when that was an apparent cause and an underlying reason due to the softness of the heart, he said: (p-270) ﴿And when they hear﴾; meaning: the followers of Christianity; ﴿what has been revealed to the Messenger﴾; meaning: that whose prophethood has been established by the miracle; it was his duty to convey what was revealed to him to the people; ﴿you see their eyes﴾; and since crying is a reason for the eyes to fill with tears; and filling is a reason for overflowing; the reality of which is flowing after filling; he expressed the effect by the cause; so he said: ﴿overflowing with tears﴾; its origin is: "her tears overflow; then she overflows with tears"; so it is one of the types of differentiation; then he explained the overflow by saying: ﴿because of what they have known of the truth﴾; meaning: and they have no worldly desire that prevents them from accepting it; then he clarified their state in their saying by saying: ﴿They say, Our Lord﴾; meaning: O You who are kind to us; ﴿We have believed﴾; meaning: in what we have heard; ﴿So write us﴾; and since it is the duty of the witness to bring the heart forth; and to listen attentively; and to fully engage with what is recited to him; and to which he is invited; he said: ﴿with the witnesses﴾; meaning: the community of Muhammad, blessings and peace be upon him, who will bear witness against the nations on the Day of Resurrection; for our strength in that is only to You;
