And when He (the Most High) attributed their curse to their disobedience and their excess in falsehood, He clarified it, specifying the scholars among them with an increased threat. This is because they, while being on the wrong, do not forbid others from it, even though they are more deserving than others to forbid it. Thus, they became upon two severe wrongs, and their silence about forbidding is misleading for the people of corruption and enticing for them and for others to enter into it and to be arrogant about it. So He (the Most High) said: ﴿They were not forbidding one another﴾; meaning: some of them do not forbid others. He clarified their immersion in the lack of concern for denouncing, in the context of negation, saying: ﴿from a wrongdoing﴾. And since the action is what it is from the deeds due to a calamity of the doer, whether it is from knowledge or not, He expressed it as a hint that they have in the wrongdoings the passion of one overwhelmed by desire, and they have no type of knowledge left. So He said: ﴿They did it﴾. And since it is human nature to forbid everything that contradicts it, either by nature or by belief, especially if it is supported by the law, it would not cease except by training the soul upon it for a corrupt purpose that led him to it. He confirmed it by swearing, expressing with the action that is expressed by what may not be accompanied by knowledge, and it can only be from a great calamity. So He said: ﴿How evil was what they were doing﴾; meaning: by nature and disposition, ﴿they were doing﴾; indicating that when their disgraceful acts were repeated and their vile actions were frequent, they reached a realm from which knowledge cannot be attained.
