Commentary
And when he negated from both of them the suitability for the rank of divinity for the essence, he followed that by negating it from the perspective of the attributes. He said - denying and clearly stating his aversion to them - indicating that they are not worthy of being approached: "Say"; meaning: to the Christians; O greatest Messenger; "Do you worship"; and he alerted that everything besides Him is below Him. They have taken them as a means to Him, by His saying: "besides Allah". He indicated by affirming the greatest name that He possesses all perfection. He expressed what they worshiped with a term that is not rational, alerting that He - glorified and exalted is He - is the One who has bestowed upon them what elevated them from that realm. If He had willed, He could have taken it away from them. He said: "What does not possess for you harm"; meaning: from itself; so that you fear it; "nor benefit"; meaning: so that you hope for it; to have for you a kind of excuse or semblance; nor is it one who hears all that can be heard, whereby He aids the distressed if he calls upon Him in any place; nor is He one who knows all that can be known, whereby He gives according to that; and all that he possesses of that is by the ownership of Allah to him, as He has given you of that what He willed.
And when he negated from him what he mentioned, explicitly and implicitly, he affirmed it for His sacred self likewise. He said: "And Allah"; meaning: while the king who has the most beautiful names, the highest attributes, and all perfection; "is"; meaning: specifically; "the Hearing, the Knowing"; and He alone is the harmful and the beneficial. He hears from you this saying and knows this wicked bond. He only coupled "the Hearing" with "the Knowing", without "the Seeing", intending to threaten those who worship others, because worship is a saying or an action, and among the actions is that which resides in the heart, which is belief, and it cannot be perceived by sight, but by knowledge. And the verse - as you see - is from the intertwining: "It indicated by what he affirmed for Himself in a manner of exclusivity to negate it in the first sentence from others; and by what he negated in the first sentence from others to affirm it for Him; and Allah is the Grantor of success.
