Commentary
And when this glad tidings - the truthful one from the Almighty, the All-Knowing; whom the people of the Book are the most knowledgeable about - is for whoever believes; whoever that may be; it necessitates entering into faith; and astonishment at those who do not hasten to it; and most of the people of the Book only hasten to disbelief; the situation necessitated remembering what has passed of His saying (glorified and exalted is He): ﴿And indeed Allah took the covenant from the Children of Israel, and We raised from among them twelve leaders﴾ [Al-Ma'idah: 12]; and an increase of astonishment at them; with that; He - glorified is He - repeated the news of it; affirming it; fulfilling His matter; and magnifying its importance; and He presented it in a way that refutes the claim of sonship; and love; turning - along with the reminder of their first story in this surah - to the beginning of the surah: ﴿Fulfill the contracts﴾ [Al-Ma'idah: 1]; and He expressed in the place of majesty with the
And with that, they did not have a long time free from disbelief; neither in the time of Musa nor in the time of those after him from the prophets - peace be upon them -; until they killed many of the messengers. This is the meaning of His saying - in response to one who might have asked: What did they do to the messengers? -: "Whenever a messenger came to them"; meaning: from those messengers; any messenger it was; "with what their souls did not desire"; meaning: with something their souls do not love; a love that falls away to him; they opposed him. So it is as if it were said: What opposition? It was said: "A group"; meaning: from the messengers; "they denied"; meaning: the Children of Israel denied them; without killing; and it indicated the severity of the ugliness of killing; and the greatness of its disgrace; by using the present tense; portraying the past situation; and alerting that this is their habit. And it is more severe than denial; so He said: "and a group they kill"; meaning: along with denial; and to indicate what occurred from them in the poisoning of the Prophet - blessings and peace be upon him; and He placed the object first to indicate the confinement of their matter in the state of denial and killing; so they have no share in a belief that contradicts their desires.
