Commentary
And when there was in these commands and prohibitions a departure from the familiar, and since prayer is the most trustworthy bond of religion, and it has been expressed by faith, which is the foundation of religion and the basis of deeds, he turned to his saying - as a reminder of what necessitates acceptance and submission -: ﴿And remember﴾; meaning a remembrance of admonition, reflection, and consideration.
And when the intended purpose of the grace is its ultimate goal, he said: ﴿The grace of Allah﴾; meaning: the Most High King; ﴿upon you﴾; meaning in His guidance for you to Islam; after you were on the brink of a pit of fire; so He saved you from it; and in addition to that, from all the other blessings. And it is only that (p-39) it was not gathered so that it would not be thought that the intention was to count the blessings, not to urge gratitude; by reflecting that this type cannot be achieved by anyone other than Him - glorified is He -; and he honored the Messenger of Allah ﷺ as he deserves, by making His action - glorified is He - his action ﷺ, and he said: ﴿And His covenant﴾; meaning His firm contract; ﴿which He bound you with﴾; meaning through His Messenger ﷺ; when He pledged you on the night of Al-Aqabah to listen and obey, in hardship and ease, in willingness and reluctance; ﴿when﴾; meaning: when; ﴿you said, 'We hear and we obey'﴾; and in that is a warning against what was intended by them from the plot of Ibn Qais; and a reminder of what he ﷺ obligated upon them; from gratitude for His guidance to them to Islam; which leads to the commitment of those covenants on the night of Al-Aqabah; which necessitates the fulfillment of the promise of Paradise; and a reference to His saying - at the beginning of the Surah -: ﴿Fulfill the contracts﴾ [Al-Ma'idah: 1]; and the hadith about performing ablution well in times of dislike clarifies the goodness of this correspondence.
And when the matter of fulfilling the covenant is difficult; it is only upheld by one whose lineage is true; and whose inner self is righteous; and it is only the fear of Allah that carries one to it; he said: ﴿And fear Allah﴾; meaning: place between yourselves and what angers the Most Great King, who does what He wills; from breaking the covenant as a protection from the goodness of standing; so that you may be in the highest ranks of His awareness; then he explained that; encouraging and warning; by saying: ﴿Indeed, Allah﴾; meaning: the One who has the attributes of perfection; ﴿is Knowing﴾; meaning: possessing profound knowledge; ﴿of what is in the breasts﴾; meaning: their conditions; from their secrets; (p-40) - even if its owner does not know them; because they have not manifested into existence -; and their public nature - even if its owner has forgotten it.
