Commentary
And when He commanded - glorified and exalted is He - with the general conveying; He commanded him with a type of it in a manner that confirms what the verse of conveying concluded with regarding the lack of guidance for those who are determined in their disbelief; and it invalidates - along with its confirmation - this claim; their saying: 'We are the children of Allah and His beloved ones'; so He said - warning them; after what has preceded of the encouragement in establishing it -: "Say, O People of the Book"; meaning: from the Jews; and the Christians; "You are not upon anything"; meaning: beneficial; or it is to be considered; from this world or the Hereafter; because it is due to its lack of benefit from its invalidity that it is not called anything at all; "until you establish"; meaning: by acting with the heart; and the body; "the Torah and the Gospel"; and what is in them of belief in Jesus; then in Muhammad - blessings and peace be upon him - by referring to each of them specifically; in a manner similar to what has preceded in the illumination from Sa'ir; and the appearances from Paran; and by referring in general to the affirmation of everyone who brought the miracle; and believed what came before him from the path of the messengers; "and what was revealed"; and when what is with them was indeed given to them through the prophets; He attributed it with the preposition of purpose; so He said: "to you from your Lord"; meaning: the Benefactor to you by revealing it upon the tongues of your prophets with the glad tidings of both of them; and upon the tongue of this noble Arab prophet; of what affirms what came before it; for indeed they know that; but they deny it.
And when the context was: "because most of them are doomed"; He explicitly stated it indicating by the conjunction to something not connected to it that the estimation is: "so let those whom Allah wills among them believe"; so He said: "and He will surely increase many of them"; meaning: what is with them of disbelief in what is in their Book; "what was revealed to you from your Lord"; the Benefactor to you by revealing it; "out of transgression"; a severe exceeding of the limit; "and disbelief"; meaning: covering what the intellect indicated.
And when he - blessings and peace be upon him - was very compassionate towards the creation of Allah; Allah consoled him in that with His saying: "So do not"; meaning: do not be caused by the informing of Allah to you of that before its occurrence; then about its occurrence as He informed; to know that it is by His will; and His power; so He said to you: "Do not grieve"; meaning: do not be sad; "for the disbelieving people"; meaning: for the loss of those who are deeply rooted in disbelief; because they have harmed only themselves; for your Lord, the All-Knowing, the All-Powerful, if He had known any good in them, He would have accepted them to you; and the result is that He concluded this verse with the cause of the verse that preceded it; as if it were said: "Convey; for indeed Allah is the Guide and the Misleader; so do not grieve for those who turned away."
