And when the hypocrites among the unlettered and the People of the Book had become one thing in their alignment with the open ones among the People of the Book; Allah, glorified and exalted is He, revealed these verses about them; in a way that encompasses others; until their conditions became clear; and their deviation was uncovered; and their situation - they denied - regarding those to whom they entrust their secrets; and grant them their affection and news; from their scholars; and their ascetics - their failure to command what is right; and their prohibition of what is wrong; for they are deserving of that; due to what they claim of following their Book; He said: "Why not"; meaning: Why not; "forbid them"; meaning: renew for them the prohibition; "the rabbaniyyun"; meaning: those who claim to detach from the world to the path of the Lord; "and the scholars"; meaning: the knowledgeable ones; "from their saying of sin"; meaning: the lies that it necessitates; and he is unanimous about it; "and their consuming of unlawful things"; and that is because their saying to the believers "We have believed" [Al-Baqarah: 14]; and their saying to them: "Indeed, we are with you; we are but mocking" [Al-Baqarah: 14]; does not escape from being a lie; and it is prohibited in their Torah; and likewise their consuming of the unlawful; so their silence about them in that is only for their training on sins; and their rebellion in disbelief; and their contempt for the boldness against one who is not hidden from him any secret; and there remains for whoever opposes him nothing lasting.

And when it is from the nature of man to deny those who oppose him; the original disposition was in accordance with what the messengers brought regarding the ugliness of lying; and what follows it of immorality; and man does not descend from that high rank to silence about the immoral; let alone improving their conditions except with long training and great practice; until that becomes for him like a trait that has become through training a craft he is accustomed to; and a quality he does not have to strive for; so the sin of the one who commits the disobedience is not firmly established; because desire calls him to it; and the sin of the one who neglects the prohibition is firmly established because he has no desire calling him to neglect; rather with him is a burden from the sound disposition; urging him to the prohibition; so he was in a worse condition; He said: "Indeed, evil is what"; and when that was in their natures; He expressed it by saying; and said: "They used to do"; meaning: in their silence about them; and their hearing from them.
