Commentary
And when that was completed, He - glorified and exalted is He - turned to His saying: "And when you call to prayer" [Al-Ma'idah: 58]; His words indicating their deserving of the curse; and upon what He informed of their evil; and their misguidance; by what He exposed them with from the evil of their deeds; as a proof of the correctness of the religion of Islam; by the knowledge of its legislator - upon him be the best prayers and peace - of the secrets of the hidden: "And when they come to you"; meaning: O believers; these hypocrites from the two factions; and the repetition of the pronoun of the two factions upon them because they are in reality from them; what their claim of faith benefited them anything with Allah; and the shift to addressing the believers indicates His turning to what I mentioned; and in it is a hint that the Prophet - blessings and peace be upon him - knows them by the tone of their speech; so do not be deceived by their deceit; nor be at ease with their cunning; by what he was given of the truth of insight; and the correctness of discernment; "They said: We have believed"; meaning: do not be deceived by their mere good words; devoid of the statement of what corresponds to them from actions; so how about those accompanied by what negates them?! And it has been known that the separation between the two conjunctions by the two previous verses does not harm; because they are a cause for what is being joined to it; they are like a part of it.
And when they claimed faith, He - glorified and exalted is He - denied them in their claim by His saying - bringing closer to their past from the present; hoping for them not to enter; because it almost reveals what they are concealing; so it is necessary to expect the clarification of it -: "And indeed"; meaning: they said that while the case is that they have; "entered"; meaning: to you; "with disbelief"; accompanying it; being clad in it.
And when the situation necessitated for them after entering a good state; because of what they see of the noble demeanor of the Messenger of Allah - blessings and peace be upon him - and his sweet speech; and his just religion; and his good guidance; they were not affected; because of what they have of envy that leads to obstinacy; He informed of that more eloquently than the sentence that informed of their disbelief; affirming the report of their steadfastness upon disbelief; because it is a matter that the rational person denies; so He said: "And they"; meaning: from their own selves; because of the evil of their consciences; and their natures; without any reason from anyone among you; neither from you; nor from your followers; "They have come out with it"; meaning: disbelief; after their entering; and seeing what they saw of good; indicating the strength of their obstinacy with the nominal sentence that indicates steadfastness; and He mentioned the subject attributed to him twice; and they by what they have shown believe that he conceals what they have hidden.
And when there was in their hearts of corruption and plotting against Islam; and its people; what would take long to explain; He alerted to it by His saying: "And Allah"; meaning: the One who encompasses all attributes of perfection; and with all things knowledge; and ability; "Knows"; meaning: more than them; and from whom He has perceived in them hypocrisy; "What they were"; meaning: what is in their natures from the great motives for corruption; "Concealing"; meaning: from this and other than it; in all their states; from their sayings and actions.
