Commentary

And when He - glorified and exalted is He - alerted to the reasons that prevent the guardianship of the disbelievers; and restricted the guardianship to Him - glorified and exalted is He -; this certainly produced His saying - alerting to other reasons; directing to disavowal from them -: "O you who have believed"; meaning: acknowledge with faith; and He alerted by the form of causation that whoever (p-195) allies with them struggles against his mind regarding that; following his desires; so He said: "Do not take those who have taken"; meaning: with utmost seriousness and effort from them; "your religion"; meaning: that which Allah has honored you with; "as mockery and play"; then He clarified the prohibition of allying with them by His saying: "from those who"; and since the intended meaning of them is to grant knowledge; which is sufficient without the need to specify the giver; He based His saying for the unknown: "were given the Scripture"; and since the prolongation of time has an effect on what a person is upon of obedience; or disobedience; and the mentioned giving did not encompass the time before; He said: "before you"; meaning that they acted mockingly out of stubbornness; after their realization of the correctness of the religion.

And when He specified; He generalized; so He said: "and the disbelievers"; meaning: from the worshippers of idols; those who have no knowledge transmitted from the prophets; rather they concealed what was clear to their minds from the evidence; so they were misguided; and likewise others; whether it is known that they mock or not; as indicated by the other reading of the Basri scholars; and Al-Kisai with the accusative; "allies"; meaning: for indeed the two groups united in their envy of you; and disdain for you; so it is not correct for you to ally with them at all.

And when the one deserving of the alliance of a person - if he leaves him and allies with another - strives to insult him; He warned them of their falling into their alliance; against their intended purpose; so He said: "And fear Allah"; He who has complete knowledge; for indeed whoever allies with another opposes Him; and whoever opposes Him will perish in a destruction that cannot be matched; "if you are believers"; meaning: firmly rooted in faith; to the extent that it has become a nature and disposition for you; so if you do not fear Him by leaving what He has prohibited you from; then there is no faith.
