Tafsir for verse: 5:54
54O you who believe, if anyone from you turns back from his Faith, then Allah will bring a people whom He loves and who love Him, humble toward the believers, hard on the disbelievers, who fight in the way of Allah and are not afraid of the reproach of any critic. That is a grace of Allah. He confers it on whom He wills. Allah is All-Embracing, All-Knowing

Commentary

And when He prohibited alliance with them; and informed that the doer of it is among them; He negated the metaphor; clearly stating the intended meaning; so He said - revealing the result of what preceded -: "O you who have believed"; meaning: acknowledge faith; "whoever allies with them among you"; this was the original; but He clarified that this is abandoning the religion; so He said: "whoever turns back"; even if in a subtle manner - as indicated by the merging in the recitation of those other than the Medinians; and Ibn 'Amir - "from you from his religion"; meaning: what we mean is the alliance with the allies of Allah; and enmity towards the enemies of Allah; so they ally with His enemies; and abandon His allies; so Allah will hate them; and they will hate Him; and they will be honored over the believers; humiliated before the disbelievers; for Allah is free of need of them; "so surely Allah will come"; meaning: the One who has absolute wealth; and supreme greatness; in their place; even if the time is long; by a truthful promise with no contradiction in it; "with a people"; meaning: their state will be contrary to their state; they will remain steadfast in their religion; and they are Abu Bakr; and those who follow him with goodness - may Allah be pleased with them.

And when His love is the foundation of all happiness; He presented it; so He said: "He loves them"; and He will make them steadfast upon it; and reward them with His generosity with the best reward; "and they love Him"; so they will remain steadfast upon it; then He described them with what clarifies that; so He said: "humble"; and it is the plural of "humble"; and when their humility is indeed gentleness and softness; not humiliation; it is in reality honor; so He indicated it with the letter of elevation; implying the meaning of compassion; so He said - clarifying that their humility is from high status; and honor -: "over the believers"; meaning: due to their knowledge that Allah loves them; "mighty against the disbelievers"; meaning: they show severity and strength against them; due to their knowledge that Allah is forsaking them; and destroying them; even if their affair becomes severe; and their dominance appears; and their oppression; so the verse (p-192) is from the intertwining: He omitted first the hatred; and what it produces; for the indication of love towards Him; and He omitted secondly the steadfastness; for the indication of apostasy towards Him; then He justified that by saying: "they strive"; meaning: they engage in jihad continuously for those who deserve it; without weariness; nor burden; like the hypocrites; and He omitted the object generally; and indicated it by signaling that obedience encompasses them; so He said: "in the way of Allah"; meaning: the path of the greatest King; the vast, straight, clear path; not for anything other than that; like the hypocrites.

And when the hypocrites would go out for jihad, He separated them from them by His saying: ﴿And not﴾; meaning: while they do not ﴿fear the blame of﴾; meaning: a single one of the blame of a ﴿blamer﴾; even if it is great; and He is great; because of that, they are firm in their religion; when they begin in a matter of the religion - a matter of good; or a prohibition of evil - they are like heated nails; the saying of a speaker does not terrify them; nor does the objection of an objector; and they do in jihad all that their ability reaches; and their strength extends to it; from the defeat of the enemies; and their humiliation; and supporting the allies; and assisting them; and they are not like the hypocrites who fear the blame of their allies from the Jews; so they do not act; even if they are with the believers; something that harms them.

And when these attributes of high rank in praise are in a place that cannot be reached; He said - pointing to them with the tool of distance; and the masculine noun -: ﴿That﴾; meaning: that which has preceded of their high attributes; ﴿is the favor of Allah﴾; meaning: encompassing every perfection; ﴿He gives﴾; meaning: Allah; because He is the creator of all the actions of the servants; ﴿whom He wills﴾; meaning: so let a person exert all effort in His obedience; to look at Him with this gaze by His mercy; ﴿And Allah﴾; meaning: the One who has complete encompassing; ﴿is All-Encompassing﴾; meaning: encompassing all attributes of perfection; for He gives from a vastness that has no limit; and no deficiency reaches it at all; ﴿All-Knowing﴾; meaning: possessing profound knowledge of who deserves good; and who deserves otherwise; and of all that can be known.
