And those who have believed say: Whoever raises it, he has connected it to the meaning of 'regretting'; for its origin is: 'they will regret'; but he expressed it with the noun to indicate the permanence of their regret. This is a glad tidings of the permanence of the appearance of this religion over every religion; or regarding 'they say we fear'; and whoever omitted the 'wa' made it a state; and whoever made it accusative, it is permissible to connect it to 'and they will become'; meaning: this will be a cause for the believers to realize the matter of the hypocrites by hastening to the people of the Book, when they rise up in joy with them; and regret at their abandonment and destruction. So some of the believers say to one another - astonished at their state; and rejoicing in what Allah has bestowed upon them of success in sincerity; pointing to the hypocrites; as a warning and denial -: 'Are these'; meaning: the insignificant ones; 'those who swore by Allah'; meaning: and He is the Most Great King; 'with the utmost of their oaths'; meaning: exaggerating in that; in defiance of His greatness; 'Indeed, they are with you'; O believers; and it is permissible that this saying is from the believers to the Jews; regarding the hypocrites; where they shared with them in support; then it began - as a response from the remainder of the words of the believers; or from the words of Allah to whoever might have said: So what will be their state? So He said -: 'Their deeds have become void'; meaning: they have corrupted; they have fallen; 'and they have become'; meaning: it has resulted from that that they have become; 'losers'; meaning: perpetually in loss; due to their toil in this world with deeds; and disappointment of hopes; and their crime in the Hereafter is a burden; and He expressed it with 'become' because there is nothing worse than encountering evil; for there is in that a suddenness; unlike what is expected and hoped.
