Commentary
And when the matter of judgment was established regarding what has passed, due to it being caused by what preceded it from the revelation of the Book concerning the mentioned conditions; He returned the matter to it - glorified and exalted is He -; explicitly stating that to Himself; not for any other reason; so that the matter would be confirmed with the utmost confirmation by commanding it twice; once because Allah commanded it; and another because it is in accordance with wisdom; so He said, affirming it; and alluding to its great significance; and warning against the enemies regarding what they cast of doubts to divert from it: "And judge between them with that"; meaning: judge between them with that; for what we have mentioned of the cause; and what we have stated of the reason for making each a religion; and because we said commanding you to "judge between them"; meaning: the people of the Books; and others; "with what Allah has revealed"; meaning: that which is specific to the attributes of perfection; for He deserves that His command be followed for its own sake; and He clarified that their opposition to it; and their turning away from it; is merely a result of desire; for their Book calls them to it; so He said: "And do not follow their desires"; meaning: in not adhering to it; "and beware of them lest they tempt you"; meaning: mix with you with their lies against Allah; and their fabrications; and their distortion of words; and their hypocrisy; in a manner that inclines you; "from some of what Allah has revealed"; meaning: that which is not greater than it; so there is no reason at all to deviate from His command; "to you; so if they turn away"; meaning: they have imposed upon themselves turning away from what you have judged between them; opposing what the original nature called for of following the truth; and what their Books called for of following you; "then know that Allah only intends"; meaning: He who has all greatness; "to afflict them"; for if He had intended good for them, He would have guided them to the acceptance that aligns with what the intellect witnesses regarding what the original nature calls for; and the transmission in their Books; either by commanding that judgment itself; or by commanding to follow you; "with some of their sins"; meaning: that which is among them; and He made it vague to increase their entrapment; and their misguidance; and a warning to them from all the evils of their actions; so that they do not know the exact sin with which they have been afflicted; thus it may lead them to return from it; and that would become like compulsion; or His vagueness may be for the sake of magnification; just as the indefinite form indicates magnification; and the context indicates the magnification of this turning away; and the abundance of their sins; and their transgression in committing them.
And when the estimation was: "Then indeed they, by turning away, are disobedient"; He added to it: "And indeed many of the people"; meaning: they are; and others; "are indeed disobedient"; meaning: they are outside the circle of obedience; and the sources of happiness; forcing themselves to show what is in their innermost selves of hidden schemes with strength;
