Commentary
Then he explained the severity of his pain by its continuity. He said: ﴿They want to escape﴾; meaning: they want to have an exit at some time, when the flame raises them to the point that it almost throws them outside; ﴿from the Fire﴾. Then he denied their exit, in a manner of strong emphasis. He said: ﴿And they are not﴾. And he intensified the negation with the preposition and the active participle. He said: ﴿Exiting from it﴾; meaning: there is no establishment for them to exit at all. And perhaps he expressed the negation with the nominal form; indicating that their exit from the heat to the extreme cold is renewed. If someone calls that an exit, it is not what they intend.
And when the tortured ones are in a place, perhaps their stay in it may last and the punishment may cease for them; he said: ﴿And for them﴾; meaning: specifically; without the sinners among the believers; ﴿is punishment﴾; meaning: sometimes by heat; and sometimes by cold; and sometimes by other than them; permanent residence; it does not leave; nor does it change; ﴿perpetual﴾.
