Commentary
And when the abandonment of these three attributes: piety, seeking the means, and jihad, removes the first description, which is faith, it is appropriate in every regard - as a warning against abandoning them - to mention the state of the disbelievers; and that no means will benefit them in that abode. So He said - explaining what preceded -: "Indeed, those who disbelieved"; meaning: by abandoning what is in the previous verse; and He arranged the punishment upon the past, increasing in warning; "If they had what is in the earth"; and He emphasized what the words imply of the totality of the circumstance and the object by saying: "all together"; meaning: from what was required of them, something very little of it; which is the acknowledgment by the belief of the heart and spending the surplus of wealth. And He intensified the matter by saying: "and like it"; and when it was for the purpose of negating the ransom as a whole, which does not have a specific amount, He said: "with it"; and when the intended purpose was to belittle that in relation to the greatness of the Day of Mutual Loss; and even if it is (p-133) with the disbelievers; those who made the ultimate goal of their affair the worldly life; the greatest it can be; and the understanding that what is meant by "like it" is the genus to include what might be assumed from examples; He returned the pronoun to these two things; upon their multitude and greatness; singularly; so He said - expressing in the present tense; indicating the renewal of desire in the matter; in a way of continuity; and because the context is for those characterized by disbelief; and waging war against Allah; and His Messenger, blessings and peace be upon him; and striving in the land with corruption; and for that reason, He explicitly stated the denial of acceptance in the coming form -: "to ransom themselves with it"; meaning: to renew the ransom at every moment; meaning: with what was mentioned; "from the punishment of the Day of Resurrection"; and when the intended purpose was to terrify the matter by its rejection; and that occurs without specifying the one who rejects; He said: "what was not accepted from them"; in the passive form; meaning: in a state of some states; and at the hands of whoever it was; because the one to whom that is directed is of complete ability; and has absolute wealth. And when there are among souls those who are base; who will not be deterred by rejection; and the rejection is for the purpose of executing the predetermined punishment; He said - explicitly stating the intended purpose -: "And for them"; meaning: after that; "is a painful punishment"; meaning: of great anguish; for what they inflicted upon the allies of Allah; by concealing what they revealed of the suns of clarity; and they violated the sanctities of the Sovereign, the Just.
