Commentary
And when He, the Most High, mentioned their ruling at the time of repentance; and concluded the verse with what is suitable of forgiveness; and mercy; and that was perhaps a reward for one who did not establish his footing in the religion; on His exalted side; He followed that matter with piety; and striving against all who corrupt by cutting the road; or disbelief; or otherwise; He said in the manner of inference from what preceded: "O you who have believed"; meaning: there is found among them the acknowledgment of faith; "Fear Allah"; meaning: place between yourselves and what you have heard of His warning to the corrupt a protection; affirming what you have acknowledged; for what He - glorified and exalted is He - has of the greatness that is worthy of being feared; and hoped for; for it combines majesty and honor.
And when the sources of obligation are limited to refraining from the disgrace of the prohibited; and adorning oneself with the garments of the commanded; and He preceded the first because it is from repelling evils; He followed it with the second; and said: "And seek"; meaning: seek with great effort; "the means"; meaning: the closeness by every means that brings you to Him; from His obedience; and do not despair; even if your sins are great; for He is Forgiving and Merciful.
And when He - glorified is He - had presented commands; and prohibitions; and the inference had clarified the people at the command and prohibition; between the one who approaches and the one who turns away; and He had commanded the one who approaches to strive against the one who turns away; and striving - for what it has of great benefit; and in it is hardship - has a greater specificity; it was singled out for mention; affirming what has passed of it; and informing that it is for the disobedient absolutely; whether it is by disbelief; or otherwise; He said: "And strive in His cause"; meaning: that His word may be the highest; "that you may succeed"; meaning: that your state may be like that of one who is hoped to attain all that he seeks; and this encompasses every matter of good; and prohibition of evil; in its highest degrees; and lowest.
