Commentary
And when the expression with 'Indeed' indicates by the conclusion of the recompense towards this aspect, it excludes from the punished this punishment by His saying: ﴿Except for those who repent﴾; meaning: they return from what they were upon of hostility, out of fear of Allah (glorified and exalted is He); and for this reason He said: ﴿Before﴾; and He established the preposition, indicating acceptance, even if the duration of disobedience was long and the duration of repentance was short; ﴿That you may be able to overcome them﴾; meaning: for the necessity of the mentioned recompense to be dropped; so they are not punished for what pertains to the rights of human beings except if the owner of the right requests; if he forgives, that is for him; and as for the right of Allah (glorified and exalted is He), it certainly drops; and this is also indicated by His saying (glorified and exalted is He): ﴿Know that Allah﴾; meaning: regarding what He has of attributes of greatness; ﴿Is Forgiving and Merciful﴾; meaning: His attribute is that, eternally and forever; so He does from it what He wills, for whom He wills; and the verse indicates that repentance after the ability does not drop anything from the prescribed punishments.
