Commentary

So it is as if it was said: They have advised them; and they have been sincere; and they have strived to rectify the religion and the worldly matters; yet they did not deceive; nor did they mislead; so what did they say? It was said: That did not increase them except in aversion; and weakness of themselves; due to their turning away from Allah; and belittling; because they said: 'O Moses'; and they confirmed their denial of taking action against them by saying: 'Indeed we'; and they magnified their affirmation by saying: 'We will never enter it'; and they added to it by saying: 'Ever'; and they restricted that by saying: 'As long as they are in it'; meaning: the tyrants; 'having power over it'; then they followed that with what indicates that they are in utmost ignorance of Allah; the One who does what He wills; the Self-Sufficient of all the servants; so they said - attributing to their denial that saying -: 'So go you and your Lord'; meaning: the One who has done good to you; yet they did not mention that He had done good to them; due to the density of their natures; and the hardness of their hearts; rather they specified Him with goodness; and this saying, if those who said it do not believe in anthropomorphism, they are approaching it; and likewise others like it; and the Jews were now deeply entrenched in anthropomorphism; then they attributed their refusal to go to their saying: 'So fight'; then they resumed their saying - affirming that whoever has a sound nature; and a straight mind; does not believe that anyone would refrain from the command of Allah; especially if it is in the presence of the Messenger -: 'Indeed we are here'; meaning: specifically; 'sitting'; meaning: we will not go with you both; so their action was the action of one who wants happiness merely by claiming faith; without believing it through a test; by doing what indicates certainty; Al-Bukhari narrated; in the battles and tafsir; from Abdullah ibn Mas'ud - may Allah be pleased with him - who said: 'Miqdad ibn Amr said on the day of Badr: O Messenger of Allah; we will not say as the people of Moses said: Go you and your Lord and fight; indeed we are here sitting; but go; and we are with you; we will fight to your right; and to your left; and in front of you; and behind you; and I saw the Prophet's face brighten; and he was pleased.'
