Commentary
And when this context motivates the soul to know their response to it; he presented it as if asking: 'This is truly a compelling encouragement; and a troubling warning; so what did they say in response?' He said: 'They said'; turning away from all of that with lowly ambitions; and declining states; addressing him by his name; with rudeness; and coarseness; and a lack of manners: 'O Moses'; and they affirmed their words with the affirmation of one who is all-knowing; they said - addressing him boldly; and with little shame; to the most knowledgeable of his time -: 'Indeed, in it'; meaning: other than it; 'a people of tyrants'; meaning: oppressors; overpowering others; forcing him to do what they want; 'and we will never enter it'; out of fear of them; 'until they leave it'; then they explicitly stated the coming of the noun phrase affirming their eagerness to enter; and that there is no barrier for them except cowardice; they said: 'So if they leave it'; meaning: in whatever way it may be; and they expressed it with a tool of doubt; while Allah informed them of their destruction at their own hands; out of their coarseness; and the ingrained nature of their denial; 'So indeed we will enter.'
