And when their argument was refuted, and their lies became clear, this necessitated turning to admonish them as a form of gratitude towards them. It also aimed to nullify what they might think is an argument. So He, the Exalted, said: "O People of the Book"; meaning: from the two groups. And since what they experienced of misguidance was due to neglecting what they had of clear signs, and changing it in a way that the sending of messengers could not be expected alongside it, He said - expressing it with a word of expectation -: "Indeed, Our Messenger has come to you"; meaning: the one whose greatness is from our greatness. Therefore, honoring and respecting him is obligatory for that. Then He clarified his state, presenting him as a matter that is more important to the messengers sent to them, guiding them to accept all that he brought, by saying: "He clarifies for you"; meaning: He will provide you with clarification in everything that benefits you, a clear explanation of what has preceded and otherwise. And when his coming was intertwined with his clarification, and a context for it that was inseparable from it, and it was a clarification that transcended the time of his coming, and what preceded it and what would come after it, by the preservation of his Book, for the universality of his call, and its conclusion, and his uniqueness, for there is no prophet after him, He said - commenting with "came" -: "after a period"; meaning: a long one in relation to what used to be between the prophets of the Children of Israel. This period began with the cessation of their coming, likening their absence and the long time since them, and the forgetting of their news, and the calamity of their symbols and traces, and the obscuring of their signs and lights, to something that would perish and fade away; nothing remained of its intended description except a hidden trace and a faded mark. It is said: "something has faded"; if its intensity has calmed down and it has become less than it was. This is because there was six hundred years between Jesus and the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him; during which the affairs of the people became corrupted. And perhaps he expressed it in the present tense in "He clarifies"; indicating that his religion and clarification do not cease at all due to the preservation of his Book. So whenever a Sunnah fades, Allah grants a scholar who brings the people back to it with the miraculous, everlasting Book. Therefore, the matter does not require a renewing prophet except during the trial that the scholars cannot bear; and that is the trial of the Dajjal, and Gog and Magog. Then He justified that by saying: "that"; meaning: out of dislike for you to say: "when you are gathered"; and you are asked about your deeds: "What came to us"; and to emphasize the negation, it was said: "from a bearer of good news"; meaning: to bring us good tidings so that we may desire and act upon what makes us happy, and thus succeed; "and not a warner"; meaning: to warn us so that we may fear and abandon what causes us distress, and thus submit; for indeed, man is divided between desire and fear. And the truth had mixed with falsehood during that period; so the matter became confused and the state was unknown. However, it was not an ignorance that would provide an excuse for polytheism; and I will clarify it at the beginning of Surah "Sad".
And when the meaning was: "So do not say that"; it caused him to say: ﴿Indeed, there has come to you﴾; meaning: one who is characterized by both descriptions together; for he is ﴿a bearer of good news and a warner﴾; meaning: complete in each of the two descriptions; even if they differ. And when it may be that someone has imagined the abandonment of sending during the period of cessation; and the abandonment of punishment without the proof of sending; and the turning away from the Children of Israel to the Children of Ishmael somewhat in capability; he said - clarifying that confusion -: ﴿And Allah﴾; meaning: He has come to you while the situation is that the King who has all perfection; ﴿over all things﴾; meaning: from sending at all times; and that He may leave that; and that He guides by the statement; and that He misleads; and from punishing; and not accepting an excuse; and that He forgives all things; and other than that; ﴿is All-Powerful﴾; and in concluding with the description of power and its following is a reminder to them of what they have attained of honor through prophethood and kingship; after they were in humiliation through servitude; and ignorance; indicating that their denial (p-72) that there could be a prophet from the offspring of Ishmael - peace be upon him - necessitates their denial of power.
