Commentary
And when His guidance is conditioned by the condition of the soundness of the nature, He clarified that by His saying - describing it -: ﴿He guides by it﴾; meaning: the Book; ﴿Allah﴾; meaning: the Greatest King, capable of acting in the innermost and the outward; ﴿whoever follows﴾; meaning: he has tasked himself and exerted effort in freeing himself from the captivity of desire; by following; ﴿His pleasure﴾; meaning: the ultimate of what pleases Him from faith; and good deeds; and it is known that this cannot be except by His success; then he mentioned the object of; “guides”; and said: ﴿the paths﴾; meaning: the ways; ﴿of peace﴾; meaning: Allah; by following the laws of His religion; and safety and security from every disliked thing; ﴿and brings them out of darkness﴾; meaning: the turmoil of souls; and desires; and the whispers of Satan; ﴿to the light﴾; meaning: that to which the intellect calls; so they become engaged in the best of deeds; as is required by the choice of one who is in the light; ﴿by His permission﴾; meaning: by His enabling.
And when one in the light may be absent from his greatest purpose; he does not look at it due to his absence from it; by his distance from it; and the causes become numerous for him; so he does not know which of them is the description; or whether his reaching it is near; and his matter is easy; He said - providing them with the light; relieving from the fatigue of the journey -: ﴿and He guides them﴾; meaning: by what He has of encompassing knowledge; and ability; ﴿to a straight path﴾; meaning: a way that leads to the purpose; without any deviation at all; and that is the true religion; and this necessitates closeness; which entails the speed of reaching.
