Commentary

And when it was known about all of this, the conditions of the two groups; he approached them as a preacher; calling out; being gentle; seeking compassion; encouraging; warning; and he said: "O people of the Book"; meaning: in general; "Our Messenger has come to you"; meaning: the one we sent with what we have of greatness; so let it be made manifest against those who oppose him; "to clarify for you"; meaning: to explain clearly; "many of what you"; meaning: with what you have of the nature of evil and betrayal; "hide of the Book"; meaning: the great scripture revealed to you; regarding the description of Muhammad, blessings and peace be upon him, and the ruling of adultery; and others; to revive the Sunnah; and to extinguish innovation - as has been mentioned from him as Allah wills in the Surah of 'Al-Baqarah'; and that is undoubtedly indicative of the truth of his message; "and He forgives much"; meaning: He does not expose you by making it manifest in compliance with our command to him regarding that - as has been previously stated that it is a kindness from him, blessings and peace be upon him, to you; for there is no benefit in making it manifest except your disgrace.

And when he informed about his distinction for the hidden matters; and the distinction can only be with light; the situation necessitated the expectation of the news that it is light; so he said - beginning with the letter of confirmation and affirmation -: "Indeed, there has come to you"; and he magnified it by saying - expressing with the greatest name -: "from Allah"; meaning: the One who encompasses the attributes of perfection; "light"; meaning: clear in its luminosity; and he is Muhammad, blessings and peace be upon him; who revealed the darkness of doubt; and polytheism; and indicated his gathering with his distinction by saying: "and a Book"; meaning: comprehensive; "clear"; meaning: clear in itself; clarifying what was hidden from the people of the truth.
