14And from those who say, “We are Christians,” We took a pledge. So, they have overlooked a good deal of the Advice they were given. So, We had them stuck with enmity and malice among them right through the Day of Doom, and (then) Allah will tell them what they were doing.

Commentary

And when the Christians entered in the past; because they are from the Children of Israel; He specifically mentioned them; because their disbelief is more severe and more repugnant; He said: ﴿And among those who said﴾; meaning: naming themselves; obligating themselves to support Allah; affirming their words; in response to those who doubt it: ﴿Indeed, we are Christians﴾; meaning: they are extreme in supporting the truth; thus, the expression by that is different from 'and among the Christians'; it is a reminder that they named themselves with what they did not fulfill; ﴿We took﴾; meaning: by what we have of greatness; ﴿Their covenant﴾; meaning: as was taken from those before them.

And when their disbelief was extremely evident and clear; He did not attribute them to anything other than abandonment; He said: ﴿So they forgot﴾; meaning: they left the leaving of the forgetful; ﴿A share﴾ meaning: (p-61) a great portion; which is competed for in its like; ﴿Of what they were reminded of﴾; meaning: in the Gospel; of what had previously been mentioned to them in the Torah; of the attributes of their Prophet ﷺ and other truths.

And when this led to their splitting into factions; it resulted in their mutual enmity; and their severing of ties; and their turning away; it caused His saying: ﴿So We incited﴾; meaning: We attached to Our greatness; an attachment that is like that which is with glue; it does not separate; rather it becomes like a part of the thing; ﴿Between them﴾; meaning: the Christians; after We made them differing factions; by the division of religion; and likewise between them and the Jews; ﴿The enmity﴾; and when enmity may arise from oppression; and the like; if it disappears, it disappears; or it lessens; He said, indicating that it is for an internal matter; arising from the beautification of desires; for it is established and does not separate; ﴿And hatred﴾; with differing desires; ﴿Until the Day of Resurrection﴾.

And when He informed them of their misery in this world; He followed it with what they have in the Hereafter; He said: ﴿And soon Allah will inform them﴾; meaning: He will inform them; ﴿Allah﴾; meaning: the Most High King; encompassing all things with power and knowledge; informing them of great matters with what is in it of severe reprimand and reproach in the Hereafter; with a warning that there is no changing of it; and when their treachery had become for them a mastery; by what they persisted in; until they were struck by it; and trained upon it; until (p-62) it became for them conditions for their souls; and morals for their hearts; He called it crafts; He said: ﴿By what they used to do﴾; meaning: they trained themselves upon it; until it became like a craft; and He will reward them for it by what establishes against them from the proof.
