Commentary
And when his response - blessings and peace be upon him - concluded in this majestic manner, the listener yearned for Allah's response to him. So He said (the Most High) - indicating that His response is true and its content is sincere, alerting to His praise and urging what the chapter is built upon regarding fulfilling contracts: ﴿Allah said﴾; meaning: the King, encompassing in majesty and honor, responding to his words; ﴿this﴾; meaning: the entirety of the Day of Resurrection. And since the appearance of the beneficial recompense is the intended goal, He said: ﴿day﴾; this is according to the reading of the majority with the raising; and the reading of Nafi' with the lowering, also not marked with tanween, due to its addition to a definite noun; meaning: 'this which has been mentioned is a reality...' Or Allah said this which preceded on the Day ﴿that benefits the truthful﴾; meaning: those deeply rooted in this description; a benefit that nothing can harm them with it; ﴿their truthfulness﴾; meaning: that which they had in this world as a stable description; which led them to fulfill what they had pledged; so it is as if it were said: what will benefit them? He said: ﴿for them are gardens﴾; meaning: they are from the irrigation of the earth, which necessitates the purity of the trees and the goodness of the fruits, such that ﴿rivers flow beneath them﴾; and since the separation of waters in the lands is more delightful, He said: ﴿from beneath them rivers﴾; and since such a thing is only pleasing if it lasts, He said: ﴿remaining in them﴾; and He emphasized this meaning by saying: ﴿forever﴾.
And since that cannot be completed except by the pleasure of the Owner, He said: ﴿Allah is pleased﴾; meaning: He who possesses the attributes of perfection; ﴿with them﴾; meaning: with all that He has of attributes; and this is a metaphor indicating that He rewarded them with what is from the reward of the pleased, a varied recompense according to the variety of what He has of all attributes of perfection and beauty. And since that cannot be completed and expanded and beautified except by their pleasure, He said: ﴿and they are pleased with Him﴾; meaning that He left them no desire except that He granted it to them. And Ibn al-Zubayr said after I have mentioned it from him: So when the Most High commanded the believers to fulfill what others had broken, and reminded them of some of what had occurred in the breaking, and what followed that for its doer, and informed them of the fruit of adhering to submission and obedience, He showed them - glorified and exalted is He - the fruit of fulfillment and its consequence. So He said (the Most High): ﴿And when Allah said, O Jesus son of Mary, did you say to the people﴾ [Al-Ma'idah: 116]; until His saying: ﴿this is the Day that benefits the truthful﴾; until its end. Thus, from its entirety, there is a command for fulfillment in what preceded it, and the state of those who opposed and broke, and the consequence of those who fulfilled, and that they are the truthful. And He has commanded us to be with them: ﴿O you who have believed, fear Allah and be with the truthful﴾ [At-Tawbah: 119]; it has ended.
And since - glorified is He - He had commanded them at the beginning of the chapter to fulfill, in gratitude for what He has made lawful for them in their worldly life, then He informed that He has increased the grateful among them, and elevated them until He permitted them the most magnificent treasures in their Hereafter; and He described - glorified is He - that which He has permitted for them, until He reached in His description what there is no addition to it; He began to envy them for it; so He said: ﴿that﴾; meaning: the lofty matter; nothing else; ﴿is the great success﴾.
