110(Call to mind the time) when Allah will say, “O ‘Īsā, son of Maryam, remember My blessing upon you and upon your mother; when I supported you with the Holy Spirit. You spoke to people while you were still in the cradle and when you grew to middle age. I taught you the Book and the Wisdom, the Torah and the Injīl. You created from clay something in the shape of a bird, then you blew on it, and it became a bird by My leave. You cured those born blind and lepers by My leave. You raised the dead by My leave. I kept the children of Isrā’īl away from you when you came to them with clear signs, and the disbelievers among them said, “This is nothing but a clear magic.”

Commentary

And when his asking - glorified and exalted is He - the messengers about the response included reproaching the falsifiers; and admonishing them; and the people of the Book were the most in need of admonishment; because their rebellion exceeded the rank of majesty; by what they described Him - glorified and exalted is He - with taking a companion; and a son; and with claiming divinity for Jesus - peace be upon him - for what he showed of miracles by which he called to Allah; along with its association with what indicates his servitude; and his message; so that his right is not violated; or he is overstepped; along with their participation with others in harming the messengers - peace be upon them - by denying; and others; and in the previous verse there was mention of the fathers; and what they favored for the children; he mentioned the matter of Jesus - peace be upon him - by saying - changing from his words -: "The Day Allah gathers" [Al-Ma'idah: 109]; expressing in the past; reminding of what that day has of inevitability of occurrence; and depicting the greatness of its realization; and alerting that because of the strength of its proximity, as if it has (p-339) already occurred; and it has passed -: "When Allah said"; meaning: the One who possesses the attributes of perfection; "O Jesus"; then he clarified what is the truth of his lineage; saying: "the son of Mary"; and when that was the Day of the Greatest Gathering; and the encompassing of all creatures; and their conditions; in their movements; and stillness; and since praise is the encompassing of the attributes of perfection; He commanded him to mention His praise - glorified and exalted is He - for His favor upon him; saying: "Remember My favor upon you"; meaning: in the specificity of yourself; and he mentioned what indicates to the wise that he is a servant who is nurtured; saying: "and upon your mother"; to the end of it; indicating that he was created without a father; so he relieved him of what is due to fathers from rights; and what they bequeath to their children from following; or guidance; and establishing the rights of his mother; so he empowered him - while he was in the cradle - to testify for her with purity; and chastity; and every favor that He - glorified and exalted is He - bestowed upon him ﷺ is a favor upon his mother; in religion and worldly matters.

And when He reminded - glorified and exalted is He - this nation called from the Arabs; and the people of the Book; and others; of His favors upon them at the beginning of the Surah; by saying: "And remember the favor of Allah upon you and His covenant" [Al-Ma'idah: 7]; "Remember the favor of Allah upon you when a group intended" [Al-Ma'idah: 11]; and these verses were from: "Do not prohibit the good things which Allah has made lawful for you" [Al-Ma'idah: 87]; all of them concerning favors; He informed them that He reminds Jesus - peace be upon him - of His favors on the Day of Gathering; indicating that if they do not remember His favors in this abode; the abode of action; with gratitude; they will remember them when He reminds them of them on that day forcibly; with disbelief; and how disgraceful it will be in that Greatest Gathering (p-340) and the most terrifying position; and let the people of the Book reflect and return from their disbelief in Jesus - peace be upon him -; the Jews; by their negligence regarding him; and the Christians; by their exaggeration in his status; and his worth.

And when the greatest of matters is glorification, he began with it; as he did with his noble self in the words of entering into Islam. And when the greatest of that is the glorification of his mother - peace be upon her - and the correction of what was broken for her from the norm at his birth; and the most prudent way for that is by strengthening his spirit; so that his words as a child would be like his words as an adult. He presented it; and said - commenting; comparing with every blessing what indicates his servitude and his message; to disgrace those who went to extremes in his matter; or fell short in describing him; and his status: "When I supported you"; meaning: I strengthened you with a great strength; "with the Spirit of Holiness"; meaning: the purity that brings life to hearts; and purifies them from the filth of sins; and from it is Gabriel - peace be upon him -; so he had from it in his childhood a share that was not for others. Al-Harali said: It is the hand of the outpouring of the Spirit of Allah in hearts; by which Allah brings them to life with His command; returning to Him in this abode; before the return of the spirit of life by the hand of Izra'il - peace be upon him -; then he began to explain this support; and said: "You will speak to people"; meaning: whom you will; from among their high and low; "in the cradle"; meaning: with what Allah has cleared from your mother; and by which He has manifested your honor and virtue.

And when he mentioned this great virtue; he followed it with another miracle; which is his reviving of himself; and preserving his body for more than a thousand years without aging; for he was raised as a young man; and descends upon what he was raised upon; and remains until he becomes an adult; and the equality of his words in the cradle with his words at the age of maturity and the completion of reason; is a breach of what customs have established; so he said: "And as an adult"; and when he mentioned this miracle; he followed it with the spirit of divine knowledge; so he said: "And when I taught you the Book"; meaning: the writing; which is the beginning of knowledge; and a fertilization for the spirit of understanding; "and wisdom"; meaning: the understanding of the realities of things; and acting upon what knowledge calls for; "and the Torah"; meaning: revealed to Moses - peace be upon him -; "and the Gospel"; meaning: revealed to you.

And when he mentioned his support with the spirit of the spirit; he followed it with his support by the pouring of the spirit upon a body that has no origin in it; so he said: "And when you create from clay"; meaning: this type; "like the form of a bird by My permission"; then he caused from that his saying: "Then you blow into it"; meaning: into the prepared form; "then it becomes"; meaning: that form which you prepared; "a bird by My permission"; then by pouring a spirit into part of a body; either beginning in the blind; as in the previous one; or a restoration; as in the incident: blindness and leprosy; by his saying: "And you heal the blind and the leper."

And when it was one of the greatest things intended by the context to rebuke those who disbelieved in it, He repeated His saying: ﴿By My permission﴾; then by returning a complete spirit to its body; by His saying: ﴿And when You bring forth the dead﴾; meaning: from the graves, either as an action or as a power; so that they would be as they were among the inhabitants of the houses; ﴿By My permission﴾; then by the protection of His spirit from those who intended to kill him; by His saying: ﴿And when I restrained the Children of Israel from you﴾; meaning: the Jews, when they intended to kill you; and when that might have suggested a deficiency, they permitted their intention by it; He clarified that he intended that as is the habit of people with the messengers and the leaders among their followers; as a consolation for this noble prophet and those who follow him with goodness; so He said: ﴿When you came to them with the clear signs﴾; meaning: all of them; some of them as an action and the rest as a power; for the indication of what was found upon him from the signs indicating your message which necessitates your greatness; ﴿So those who disbelieved said﴾; meaning: they covered those clear signs out of stubbornness; ﴿Among them, if﴾; meaning: what ﴿This is nothing but clear magic﴾.
