Commentary
And when there was the establishment of witnesses in it; and their being restrained from their purposes; until they finish from this incident being investigated regarding the hidden matters related to death; and the severity of the oath after the 'Asr prayer; and it was a time when people gather; and the two groups of angels who alternate among us night and day; although it is the time of the evening signaling the onset of night; and the decline of the day; until it is as if it had not been; and the return of people to their homes; and their leaving their livelihoods; and it was His habit - glorified and exalted is He - that He mentions types of laws and obligations; then follows them either with divine matters; or with an explanation of the conditions of the prophets; or with an explanation of the conditions of the Day of Resurrection; so that this becomes a confirmation of what has preceded from the obligations; and He does not transition from one subject to another except with the utmost precision in the connection; He followed it (the Exalted) with His saying: ﴿On the Day Allah gathers﴾; meaning: the Greatest King; who has complete encompassing; ﴿the messengers﴾; meaning: those whom He sent to His servants; with His commands and prohibitions; indicating the reminder of the passing of this abode; and the swiftness of its onset; by witnessing these conditions that signal it; and that it is a day when the witnesses will rise; and the servants will gather; and the people of corruption will be exposed; and other such indications for the possessors of insight and hearts; and it is apparent that 'DAY' is a time frame for the omitted subject indicated by the words; for it is known that when you say: 'Fear (p-337) so-and-so'; the meaning is: 'Fear his punishment'; and similar to that; so the intended meaning here is: And be mindful of the anger of Allah that occurs on that day; meaning: place a barrier between yourselves and His wrath on that day; or the meaning may be: Remember this incident; and this time when the witnesses are gathered; and the confessor and the denier are restrained; on the Day of the Great Gathering; before Allah (the Exalted); to ask them about the servants; and to ask the servants about them; ﴿Then He will say﴾; meaning: to the messengers; legislating for them; and clarifying their virtue; and honoring the truthful among their nations; and reproaching the false; and admonishing the negligent among them; and the negligent.
And when it was clear that they were answered; and there is no dispute in it; and there is no ulterior motive related to the question about it; the question transcended to inquiry of the type of response; so He said: ﴿What were you answered﴾; meaning: what response did those whom you were sent to give you; a response of obedience or a response of disobedience?
And when the aim of their saying was to clarify the one who is saved from others; and the testimony in that abode does not benefit except in what aligns with the concealment and the manifestation; their testimony does not benefit the one being testified for in terms of a good response; unless what he said with his tongue corresponds to what he believes in his heart; ﴿They said﴾; denying their knowledge of it fundamentally; and primarily; if it is conditional; it is from the knowledge of what is unseen; and they have no knowledge of it ﴿We have no knowledge﴾; meaning: in reality; for we only know what we have witnessed; and what is unseen from us is more; and if the unseen may be contrary to the witnessed; then what is witnessed is not knowledge; because it does not correspond to reality; and for this reason they justified by saying: ﴿Indeed, You are﴾; meaning: solely You; ﴿The Knower of the Unseen﴾; meaning: all of it; You know it with complete knowledge; so how about what is unseen from us regarding our people?! So how about the testimony?! So how about what we have witnessed of that?! And this is in the context of their saying: You are more knowledgeable; but this is more polite; for they erased themselves from the record of knowledge entirely; for every knowledge diminishes if attributed to His knowledge; and it diminishes no matter how it is associated with His attribute; or His name.
