Commentary
And when they took it as a religion; and believed in it as a law; and their ancestors adhered to it; their fortunes called them; and their pride in the lineage of their fathers to misguidance; and the testimony against them of foolishness; led them to insist on it; and not to return from it; after the ugliness of it became clear; and its disgrace was made evident; until most of them were killed by the sword; and calamities trampled them; so it crushed their shoulders; and humbled their necks; and their sides; and He said (the Exalted) - indicating the conclusion of the previous verse; regarding their lack of understanding -: "And when it is said to them"; meaning: from any speaker it may be; even if he is their Lord; with what is established from their words of being unable to refute it that it is His words; "Come"; meaning: elevate yourselves from this low pit; "to what Allah has revealed"; meaning: that which is greater than it; and it has been established that He revealed it due to your inability to refute it; "and to the Messenger"; meaning: the one whose nature - due to Him - glorified and exalted is He - is that He was sent; to convey to you what He loves for you; and is pleased with; "They said: Enough for us"; meaning: it is sufficient for us; "what we found our fathers upon"; and when they were aware that there was no scholar among their fathers; and that whoever reflects even slightly knows that the ignorant does not find guidance to anything; he said - rejecting them; reproaching them -: "Even if"; meaning: will it suffice them if they say that; even if "their fathers knew nothing"; meaning: of things; truly knowing them; because they did not take it from Allah; by any of the paths leading to Him; and when it was known that one who does not know may feel his ignorance; so he learns; so he finds guidance; and becomes worthy of being followed; and he may not feel due to his ignorance being compounded; so it is not permissible to follow him; He clarified that they are among the people of this category; so He said: "And they do not seek guidance"; meaning: they do not seek guidance; so their guidance to correctness does not exist; because whoever does not know has no correctness; because there is no means to guidance except knowledge; and the most evident proof of their lack of guidance is that they wasted the good of their wealth; which forced them to eat the bad of carrion; and they angered their Creator by that; so they entered the fire; and there is nothing more disgraceful than what the one who is inclined to impurity chooses for himself; and nothing better than what the Lord of mankind legislates for him; and this verse refers to His saying (the Exalted) - in the Surah of "An-Nisa" -: "They invoke besides Him only females, and they invoke only a rebellious devil" [An-Nisa: 117]; to His saying: "And I will surely order them to cut off the ears of the animals" [An-Nisa: 119]; so He then turned to His saying: "An abomination from the work of Satan" [Al-Ma'idah: 90]; what a turning.
