Commentary
And when he prohibited asking about it to know its state; he justified that by saying that others had known things; and he requested that it be given to him; either by asking others about it; or by initiating it; and he asked others to agree with him on it; and he is certain that it is a pinnacle of beauty; so it became the cause of his misery; and he said: ﴿He has asked about it﴾; meaning its like; and he did not say: "He asked about it"; indicating what it has shown; ﴿A people﴾; meaning: those of determination; and strength; and standing firm in matters; and when the existence of the people was a virtue beyond their asking; it did not take up the time of the past; he included the neighbor; and said: ﴿Before you﴾; and when a thing comes from a matter worthy of acceptance; especially if it is from a king; how about if it is from the King of kings? So his rejection was extremely far; he expressed his distance by the tool of distance; in his saying: ﴿Then they became with it﴾; meaning: after their coming to it; equally without delay; ﴿Disbelievers﴾; meaning: steadfast in disbelief; this is a powerful admonition for them to return to what they intended of prohibiting what has been made lawful for them; inclining towards monasticism; and delving deeply into religion; which is prohibited by His saying: ﴿Do not prohibit the good things which Allah has made lawful for you﴾ [Al-Ma'idah: 87].
