Commentary
And when He, glorified and exalted is He, removed knowledge from everyone, and affirmed it for His noble Self, it resulted in the fact that there is no command for anyone else, nor prohibition, nor affirmation, nor denial. So He, glorified and exalted is He, began to clarify the wisdom of what has passed from the commands regarding the permissibility of food and others, from hunting, and eating from the game and others, and the prohibitions regarding wine and others, by stating that some things are pure and some are impure. And that the pure, even if it is little, is better than the impure, even if it is abundant; and none distinguishes this from that except the Creator, the All-Knowing. Perhaps a person may adopt a way that he has legislated for himself, thinking that it is good, which leads him to evil while he is unaware, and he perishes, like the monasticism that they had resolved upon, and the wine that their passion for it led them to indulge in repeatedly, until it was confirmed here with the strongest confirmation, and he warned against it with the most emphatic warning. He said, the Exalted, directing the address to the noblest of creation, blessings and peace be upon him, indicating that no one other than him can comprehend this from creation: 'Say, the impure is not equal...' meaning: from the foods and those who consume them; 'and the pure...' meaning: likewise; for what they imagine in abundance of virtue does not equal the deficiency in terms of the impure.
And when the evil is more apparent in essence and meanings, and easier, he said: ﴿And if the abundance of the evil pleases you﴾; and the evil and the good are both corporeal and spiritual; and the worst of them is the spiritual; and the worst of it is polytheism; and the best of the good is the spiritual; and the best of it is the knowledge of Allah; and His obedience; and what is for the body of good or evil is apparent to everyone; so whatever is mixed with impurity becomes detestable to those of sound nature; and whatever is mixed with the spirits from ignorance becomes detestable to the complete and sacred spirits; and whatever is mixed with the spirits is the knowledge of Allah; and whoever persists in serving Him, shines with the lights of divine knowledge; and rejoices in the proximity to the pure and sacred spirits; and just as the evil and the good do not equal each other in the spiritual world, so too do they not equal each other in the corporeal world; and the disparity between them in the spiritual world is greater; because the harm of the evil of the corporeal is little; and the benefit of its good is slight; but as for the evil of the spiritual, its harm is great and everlasting; and the good of the spiritual has a magnificent and everlasting benefit; which is the proximity to Allah; and being among the group of the happy; and the clearest evidence of the will of the disobedient and the obedient is His saying: ﴿So fear Allah﴾; meaning: place between yourselves and what angers the Greatest King - who has the attributes of perfection - from the forbidden a protection from the lawful; so that you may be among the portion of the good; for there is no closer means to Allah than refraining from what He has prohibited - as previously indicated by His saying: ﴿Then fear and do good﴾ [Al-Ma'idah: 93]; and the meaning is made clearer by His saying: ﴿O people of understanding﴾; meaning: those with pure intellects free from the impurities of the soul; so you prefer the good; even if it is little in the sensory realm; for its abundance in meaning over the evil; even if the evil is abundant in the sensory realm; for it lacks in meaning; ﴿Perhaps you will succeed﴾; meaning: so that you may have hope of attaining all your desires; and at that time, the appropriateness of its follow-up becomes as clear as the sun with His saying - in the manner of resumption and inference -:
