Commentary
And when He, glorified and exalted is He, prohibited the neglect of manners and commanded the preservation of reverence, and mentioned the description of the obedient, He followed that by describing, as a result, those who neglect it. He said, affirming that their state was like that of one who abandons complete reason: ﴿Indeed, those who call you﴾ meaning: they renew their calling to you without repentance, while their calling to you is indeed ﴿from behind﴾. The establishment of this preposition indicates that he ﷺ was within it. If it were to fall away, it would not be beneficial; rather, it would indicate that the places that are behind the chambers are all, in relation to him and to them, equal. This is because all would be outside of it, and 'behind' is the direction that conceals you and conceals it from behind or in front.
And when the Messenger ﷺ was of such greatness in himself and in conveying the messages of Allah in their form, to such an extent that it is not hidden from anyone. So, no one has the right to encroach upon it against him nor to hasten him regarding anything. His calling was therefore from behind one chamber just as it was from behind every chamber. He gathered and said: ﴿the chambers﴾ and did not attribute them to him out of reverence for him, and to include being in others as well. The meaning is: beginning the calling from a direction in which the chambers are between you and them, so that it is parallel to you from them and to them from you. It is the plural of chamber, which is what is surrounded by a wall that prevents those outside from harming those inside by word or deed. For he would be in what pertains to him from gathering with his wives or rectifying something of his state, which cannot be prepared for him with the presence of people in what manliness requires. He ascribed the action to the plural even if the caller was some of them for being pleased with it or remaining silent about the prohibition.
And when the silent one may not be pleased, he said: ﴿Most of them﴾ meaning: (the caller and the pleased) without [the silent] for an excuse ﴿do not understand﴾ because they did not have patience. Rather, they acted with him ﷺ as some of them act with one who resembles him, and reason prevents such a thing for one who possesses leadership. So how about if the leadership is that of prophethood and messengership from the one, the overpowering king?
